Junk food has become an ever increasing threat to our world. It’s popularity has soared over the last couple of decades, and consequently so have the nation’s waistlines. With it’s highly calorific content, junk food is considered one of the root causes behind the nation’s obesity crisis. It is one of the biggest silent killers the Western world has ever faced. The challenge society now faces, is how to stop addiction to junk food.

How Do I Get Rid Of My Addiction To Fast Food?

1. Clear Your Cupboards – Remove Junk Food!

The first starting point whenever you decide to eat more healthily, is to clear out your kitchen cupboards. Remove ALL junk food i.e. crisps, chocolate, chocolate spread, ice cream, cans of fizzy drink etc.

This may sound a touch dramatic, but it’s not! Why? Because if you are making big changes in your diet and eating habits, then your willpower is going to get tested, repeatedly. It’s not going to be a nice smooth easy ride. Why make your life harder than it needs to be?

The journey to eating healthily will become easier as the weeks go on, and your brains addiction to sugary foods will lessen. However, in the beginning you will likely experience strong cravings for sugary foods. If your leave your kitchen cupboards packed full of junk food, then you are leaving temptation in the home. You are far less likely to succeed in your new healthy diet.

2. Drink Water

Make sure you drink plenty of water, as feelings of hunger and thirst are commonly mixed up. Ideally, aim to drink between 6-8 glasses of water a day (source).

One easy way to remember to increase your water intake, is to have a glass of water before every meal. After you have done this, wait a few moments to see if your cravings reduce. If they do, you were thirsty, not hungry.

Whilst out and about, make sure you take a water bottle with you to keep hydrated throughout the day. Try this really cool drinks bottle from Amazon. 3. Trigger Foods: Are You Addicted To Junk?

Which processed junk food do you crave, or binge on? Take a look at your existing diet, and write your ‘trigger foods’ down. The first step to breaking a habit, is to identify what triggers it.

Once you have your list of trigger foods, have a think about when you eat these foods. For instance, do you tend to binge on processed junk food when you are feeling stressed? Do you often grab convenience food on days when you are rushing kids from one activity to the next? Now that you are aware of your triggers, your mind is better able to tackle future urges to binge eat processed junk food.

The next step is to think about what you could do, to reduce these feelings. Could you distract yourself by going for a 30 minute walk? 4. Eat More Protein

Try to include a palm side portion of protein with every meal.

Protein is very filling, and reduces feelings of hunger. Including protein within each meal helps to lessens the hunger hormone ghrelin, which means that you are less likely to go snacking on processed junk food.

Studies have looked at the impact of protein on overweight men. According to Healthline, “increasing protein to 25% of calories reduced cravings by 60% and the desire to snack at night by half” (source).

5. Eat More Spinach!

This might sound like a funny one, but spinach is scientifically proven to be great for weight loss. How does this help to reduce your junk food intake though?

Well, firstly, spinach is low in calories, yet packed full of nutrients that are great for your body. Professor Erlanson-Albertsson discovered that drinking spinach before breakfast each morning, slows the digestion process down. This has the knock-on effect of giving your body time to release hormones to your brain, telling it you feel full. This is a great way to reduce your cravings for junk food, because the hormones produced act as appetite suppressants (source).
