What Are The Warning Signs?

Depression is not a one size fits all mental health condition. In fact, did you realise that it can manifest itself differently in men and women? 1. Loss Of Interest

Activities you used to love just don’t seem to be hitting the spot anymore. You really want to feel interested, but have no idea why you aren’t. It is likely you are hoping this disinterested feeling will pass.

If you are suffering from depression, lack of interest in everything can be a common internal feeling. Don’t give yourselves a hard time over it. Depression isn’t your fault. The emotions you are experiencing (guilt because you are not interested, or general lack of interest) are natural to sufferers of depression.

How To Help Yourself Through Depression

It may feel like the last thing you want to do, but practising mindfulness may help to realign your thoughts and feelings.

Mindfulness is a form of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as: “the practice of being aware of your body, mind, and feelings in the present moment, thought to create a feeling of calm”

If you want to learn how to be more mindful, read this book “Mindfulness: A practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world”. This is a great read, and explains everything you need to know on how to practice mindfulness in daily life.

4. Feeling Exhausted

Signs of depression and anxiety are not always clear. So, I don’t just mean that you could be suffering from depression just because you feel tired. We ALL feel tired, most of our lives! … It’s called having children, and busy hectic lifestyles.

Nope, what I am talking about is way more than that. If you’ve ever experienced it, you will know it’s no simple thing to overcome. It’s quite debilitating, because all you want to do is sleep, or just be sedentary. But the irony is, you often cannot get a good night’s sleep because stress (which possibly triggered your depression) is keeping you awake.

The smallest tasks feel like a mission. You don’t feel you have enough energy to get anything done, which then makes you feel guilty because you haven’t felt able to do anything.

Your overriding feeling is of complete exhaustion.

5. Social Anxiety

Have you always been a social butterfly, yet now cringe when your friends suggest a night out? Do you find yourself hiding from people, and ignoring your friends telephone calls because you don’t feel like you even have the energy to chat?

If this sounds like you, then it might be a warning signal that you have a level of depression. Depression kinda sucks the life out of you, and makes you want to hide from all social inputs.

Anxiety Treatments

Sometimes, the only person that can get you out of your depression, IS YOU. You want to feel better and happier, but it’s going to take effort and determination.

  1. Self Help Therapy: There are some great self help books on the market, which teach you how to practice CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). Books such as Mind over Mood encourage you to change the way you think and feel about things. CBT has been proven to be effective for many people, because over time it alters the way you react to things happening around you.
  2. Mental Health Services Online: If you are lucky enough to live in the UK, check out the NHS online mental health service offerings. They offer a range of different mental health services (some free, some paid for) which teach you how to manage life issues. They also offer live computer based chats with trained therapists.
  3. Anxiety Management: Anxiety and stress are two main culprits for causing depression. Whilst regular exercise will help to reduce feelings of anxiety, also consider reading Hardcore Self Help: F**k Anxiety. This book is a great read, and teaches you how to manage anxiety. You just have to look past the rude title!
