Depression is not a one size fits all mental health condition. In fact, did you realise that it can manifest itself differently in men and women? It’s symptoms also vary significantly from person to person. It sounds crazy, but one individual may experience mental and emotional issues, whereas another person might be experiencing physical symptoms. Learn the signs of depression and anxiety.
1. Loss Of Interest
Activities you used to love just don’t seem to be hitting the spot anymore. You really want to feel interested, but have no idea why you aren’t. It is likely you are hoping this disinterested feeling will pass.
If you are suffering from depression, lack of interest in everything can be a common internal feeling. Don’t give yourselves a hard time over it. Depression isn’t your fault. The emotions you are experiencing (guilt because you are not interested, or general lack of interest) are natural to sufferers of depression.

Mindfulness is a form of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as: “the practice of being aware of your body, mind, and feelings in the present moment, thought to create a feeling of calm”.

Depression and stress can affect the body in many different ways.
Signs of depression and anxiety are not necessarily linked to just your mental health and emotions. It can also display as a physical issues too, such as nausea, diarrhea, lack of appetite, or constipation. Even bloating can be linked to depression!
How To Calm An Anxious Stomach
- Mindfulness: Take a look at your current lifestyle, and work out how to remove the stressful aspects. If this isn’t going to be possible, consider Mindfulness as a coping mechanism.

5. Social Anxiety

Books such as “Mind over Mood“ encourage you to change the way you think and feel about things. CBT has been proven to be effective for many people, because over time it alters the way you react to things happening around you.
- Mental Health Services Online: If you are lucky enough to live in the UK, check out the NHS online mental health service offerings. They offer a range of different mental health services (some free, some paid for) which teach you how to manage life issues. They also offer live computer based chats with trained therapists.
- Anxiety Management: Anxiety and stress are two main culprits for causing depression. Whilst regular exercise will help to reduce feelings of anxiety, also consider reading “Hardcore Self Help: F**k Anxiety“. This book is a great read, and teaches you how to manage anxiety. You just have to look past the rude title!
